Michael Ray is a Singer/Songwriter/Musician and former member of several Newark, New Jersey bands. He has been entertaining family and friends for years. He appeared with groups including The Soulful Five; One Step Higher; The Knights Of Soul; The Third Power Band. Reginald and Kelly Willoughby were band members and entrepreneurs who, together with Mike started a business venture, The Third Power Disco in Newark, New Jersey. Mike, part owner of the Disco, was also Drummer and Lead Vocalist of the group.. During that time he performed a variety of musical styles, delivering his vocal talents and enhancing his musical skills. As family, friends and fans all say, "The guy can Sing. He is serious about his music but because of family obligations, he assumed the father role and concentrated on providing for his family and properly raising his children. In addition to handling his family obligations, he wrote and produced several Jingles for New Jersey Transit, was featured on Channel 7 Eyewitness News (interviewed by Art McFarland) and several local newspapers and Cable TV shows. He was known by some as the Singing Bus Driver. He appeared throughout the New York/New Jersey area and was a featured act at New Jersey's annual Hoboken Festival.
Mike is originally from Shreveport, Louisiana. Most of his music influence came from his mother (Norma Grace) and siblings. "Mom made the seemingly impossible possible as a provider." He says, "Without strong, positive parental role models, children may wander aimlessly through life." He attended Booker T. Washington High School in Shreveport until 1969 and moved to Newark, NJ. He was a part of the graduating Class of 1970 at Barringer High School.
His first real encounter with club singing was at a club in Passaic, NJ in which he won 3rd prize in the talent contest. He would continue with the local club circuit for several years. He credits other singers and musicians who have influenced him as being but not limited to: Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Williams, Peabo Bryson, George Benson, Aretha Franklin, Oleta Adams, Prince and others. As he says, "Hearing their songs made me not want to give up on my goal of recording my songs." He continues, "Artist like them just inspire you with their talent to do your best." And that's what Mike does.
Mike, a self-taught musician, was given preliminary music lessons by a music teacher he remembers as Mr. Argand of Barringer High School in Newark, NJ. However, in accomplishing most of his musical abilities, he learned by watching, listening and repeating and practicing. That's "Practice, Practice, Practice, as he says. Mike is also a self taught recording engineer. He learned some basics from Robert Honablue, a former CBS engineer. He says "You have to believe in yourself and your music and maintain a proper perspective."
Mike appreciates a variety of music that has a positive moral flavor. His friends will tell you the same. He lives in the Pocono area of Pennsylvania and works hard at pleasing The True God, His Family and His Friends (JW's).
